Why you are doing this before the adipic-acid experiment

A scientist checks an instrument with known examples before trusting it with an unknown sample. Here, the “instrument” is an AI chatbot. Every student evaluates the same four chemistry cases so you can observe what the AI notices, what it overlooks, and whether its reasoning changes when asked to check the work again.

You have not performed the adipic-acid oxidation yet, and that is intentional. This stage captures a standardized AI response set early in the semester. When you run the wet experiment in Module 11, you will have enough chemical and experimental context to audit the saved responses more deeply and decide when an AI evaluation deserves trust.

No personal laboratory results are needed today. The page supplies the fixed data, exact prompts, and coding vocabulary. The September annotation records your provisional judgment using the chemistry you currently know.

What is expected in September

  • Preserve every prompt and AI response completely and exactly.
  • Judge each response from the information supplied in that conversation and identify the sentence supporting your judgment.
  • Select Indeterminate or evasive whenever your current knowledge or the supplied evidence does not support a confident conclusion.
  • Complete each numbered case independently. Case-to-case comparison begins in the later capstone.

September grading focuses on faithful preservation, complete annotations, and evidence-based reasoning. The page provides everything required for this first pass; full study of the adipic-acid experiment occurs in Module 11.

After Module 11, you will calculate the theoretical mass, percent yield, and atom economy; verify chemical claims introduced by the AI; compare the conversations; and revise your judgments using the chemistry developed during the course.

Choose your asynchronous work time

You may begin at any convenient time during the posted Canvas window. Once you begin, complete all four conversations in one uninterrupted sitting so the AI access condition remains as consistent as possible.

  1. Set aside about 60–75 minutes with a stable internet connection.
  2. Keep this collector tab open. In a separate private or incognito window, go to ChatGPT and remain logged out.
  3. Use a separate fresh conversation for each of the four numbered cases.
  4. Copy each prompt exactly from this page and paste each complete response back here.
  5. Do not enter your name, your own laboratory results, or other personal information in either site.

Course rule: the AI output is raw experimental data. Preserve every response complete and unedited, even when it is repetitive, incorrect, or unusually long.
